If you have a lot of data to backup, chances are Crashplan will start crashing once you have a certain number files. By default, Crashplan allocates 512 MB of memory for the Java process. I have almost 2TB worth of data to backup, which seems to be more than Crashplan can handle with 512 MB of memory.
If I tried to run the Crashplan app, it would run ok for a few minutes before closing automatically. I tried running updates and even a reinstall of the Crashplan app to no avail. I checked the logs and it showed that Crashplan was constantly starting/stopping.
The fix was to increase the amount of memory. Crashplan needs ~500 MB memory for every 1.5GB of space used.
Edit the CrashPlan “CrashPlanService.ini”
1. Stop the backup engine service
2. Open C:\Program Files\CrashPlan\CrashPlanService.ini in a text editor
3. Find the setting:
-Xmx512m
4. Change it to 1024m for 1GB of RAM. Save.
-Xmx1024m
5. Start the backup engine.
